Flexible work should make life easier to manage, not create a second scheduling problem. Before registering for or accepting an opportunity, look beyond the job title and think about how the work would fit into your actual week.

Start with the hours you can really commit

Be realistic about the time you have available. A four-hour shift can easily take longer once travel and preparation are included. Think about the days and times you can consistently keep free before choosing an opportunity.

Check whether the location works for you

A role may sound suitable until the travel time is added. For on-site work, check where the assignment takes place and how long it would realistically take you to get there. For hybrid work, confirm how often you would need to be on site.

Look at the commitment, not only the hourly rate

Two opportunities with the same hourly rate can require very different levels of commitment. Check whether the work is a one-off assignment, a regular weekly shift or a project that runs for several weeks.

Choose work that you can reliably show up for

Flexible work still depends on reliability. It is usually better to choose an assignment that genuinely fits your schedule than to accept more work and later struggle to attend.

A good opportunity should work for both sides. Before proceeding, make sure you understand the schedule, location, compensation and expected commitment.
